Unleash Tomorrow

A Capital Campaign to Build Our New Shelter

Since 1972, we have been loving and supporting the animals and pets of the Bitterroot Valley

When people call in frantic about a lost pet … we answer.
When there is a community emergency … we stand ready to help. There is a continuing and enduring need for the shelter … we will be here.

No one would have guessed in 1985 when our current shelter was built, how many animals would find safety, protection and a new future through the Bitter Root Humane Association.

We're grateful for our current shelter. But it's no longer safe or functional for our staff, volunteers and most of all for all the animals that call us home

Sure. We have a roof over our head. But it sometimes leaks. We might have windows to look out. But they’re broken, cracked, single pane and non-energy efficient. Our walls have holes that let in outside critters. We have water lines running across the walls. And then there’s the boiler room … 35 years has taken its toll.

Our plan to build a new shelter began with a vision of a modern facility which will propel us through the next forty years and beyond.

We envision not just kennels, not just a shelter, but a true safe haven for the lost, abandoned or abused animals and a “home” our community can be proud of.  We have been dreaming of a new facility since 2006. We enlisted the aid of engineers & architects specialized in the field of animal sheltering and we have been saving & fundraising ever since. Although we receive no ongoing government funding, through the generous support and hard work of many, groundbreaking took place in March and construction has begun; we look forward to opening our “new” doors before the end of the year.

Our new shelter will include:

  • Spacious dog kennels with variable house & adjoining outdoor play areas
  • Flexible cat living areas, with outdoor porches
  • Safer and larger working spaces
  • Living spaces conducive to more natural habitat
  • Less noise leading to less stress
  • Specialized air control systems for comfort and disease control
  • An expanded Meet & Greet area and larger dog exercise areas
  • Separate intake areas with enhanced medical and behavioral assessment capabilities
  • A new Community Education room

And much, much more!

Every donation makes a difference and we need your support now!

In this time of uncertainty, there’s a fundamental truth that gives us hope – that the Bitter Root Humane Association is here to serve our community, through good times and bad and that together we can do extraordinary things.

We thought we had all the funds to take our dream from paper to reality. However, due to some legal delays last fall and the rising costs of materials and labor we have fallen short of our goal. Although we have raised 70% of our cost, now we must raise another $1,000,000 to fully fund our new home without debt.

How Can I Help?

All donations, even as little as $5 a month, will help us meet our goal!
